The Caliper Question Has No Single Answer
Here's the thing: if you ask ten machinists which caliper is better—Starrett or Mitutoyo—you'll get ten different answers, and most of them will be based on what they used first, not what's actually better for your specific job.

Mitutoyo. No hesitation.

The rule of thumb I use: If the annual tool budget can absorb a 5% failure rate without drama, go Starrett for the better user experience. If a caliper failure could shut down a production line or cause a $22,000 redo (which we had happen once due to an out-of-spec bearing measured with a drifting caliper), go Mitutoyo for the higher reliability floor.
